Nigeria's debt and how you can take action
Although some of Nigeria's $30 billion debt has been cancelled, they still have to pay $12.4 billion upfront to 14 of the world's richest countries. And the UK is about to collect £1.7 billion of that. The Jubilee Debt Campaign is calling for the UK government to return the money it is about to receive. You can join the campaign by writing a letter or email to Gordon Brown or contacting your local media. Find out more about the campaign and why Nigeria's debt is both unjust and unpayable here. Is it fair? Should we be calling for a repayment? Did the G8 do enough on debt cancellation? Have your say below.

May I ask the Jubilee Debt Campaign to stop calling on the UK government to return £1.7 billion debt Nigeria is owing. Because, the kleptocratic ruling Party in power in Nigeria will misappropriate the money as the corrupt Nigerian government has been doing for decades. The British Government should collect the money and donate it to the British Council, OXFAM and the International Red Cross for the funding of their programmes in Nigeria.

Hi there, thanks for your comment. It's an interesting point. The reason that Oxfam is supporting this campaign is well explained here. This includes a paragraph about the steps the current Nigerian government is taking to fight corruption. Thanks again.
