Sports stars join campaign for trade justice

Some of the UK's big-name sports stars have given their backing to the call for trade justice, ahead of the World Trade Organisation meeting next week. The Make Poverty History coalition has produced posters of stars like Kelly Holmes (above) trying to go about their sport whilst impeded in some way or other - to illustrate how unfair trade rules are holding back development in the world's poorest countries.

In the pics, Kelly Holmes has baskets tied to her wrists, Freddie Flintoff tries to bowl with something that looks like an apple, Djibril Cisse plays keepie-up with a water melon and Ronnie O'Sullivan attempts to clear a snooker table of assorted strawberries, lemons and limes, rather than the usual red, yellow, green and brown.

The Guardian website has a feature about the campaign, and explains its purpose: "The images feature key elements of the campaign: how global trade rules destroy farmers' livelihoods and force the developing world's poor to pay for basic services such as water, health and education."

As a spokesman for Make Poverty History put it: "Farmers in wealthy countries are subsidised by their governments and dump their excess produce on poor countries. So farmers in developing countries can't even sell their produce locally, let alone export it to foreign markets."

We want you to put pressure on world leaders ahead of the World Trade Organisation talks. Make sure they put the spotlight on trade justice. The 3rd White Band Day on Saturday 10 December is the perfect opportunity to take action. First up, send an e-mail to the EU and US and demand they face up to poverty at the WTO summit in Hong Kong. And then download our special 'Spotlight on trade justice' poster, and put it in your window...
