Who could end poverty? Vote now!

Bob Geldof? Nelson Mandela? Chantelle Houghton? Vote now for the one person who you think can do the most to end poverty, in the I'm In - People's Poll. It could be absolutely anyone in the world, even your Mum. Perhaps. Closing date for nominations is 25 March, when Oxfam will announce the all-time top 5. So vote now, and tell your friends to vote too.

Eminem, end poverty? You're 'avin a larf, aintcha? I reckon big sport stars like Beckham should get behind campaigns like Make Poverty History - they'd have a massive impact I reckon.

I don't mean to be disparaging, but what's the point in this? What's going to happen when a winner is chosen?

By Anonymous Edd, February 06, 2006 4:44 PM

this is insulting

Sadly I have to support the comments here. this really does seem like a bit of a waste of time and a bit patronising. People don't need celebrity endorsements. If I had to vote? It would be for 'the people'

Afternoon,

While I agree totally with what everyone has been saying; the poll appears on the outset as somewhat patronising. I do however see it as an excellent hook to get people involved who may be unaware of so many of the issues that effect our world. This is a simple way of bringing people into the issue slowly and doesn't leave an impression of guilt or a sense that they have just been given a speech from a soap box, cause no one likes a preacher!

Peace out

A quick update on this - Oxfam has just launched a press release which gives the poll a bit more weight and context. It's been backed by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and it states that the individuals with the most votes "will be challenged to help rid the world of poverty and injustice". So they are going to do something with the votes, after all.

Why not Vote David Irving , he may have the time

By Anonymous Anonymous, February 24, 2006 5:24 PM

Only Number Five? You're 'avin a larf aintcha? You're right about Clive, though.

By Anonymous Blog Admin, February 24, 2006 5:24 PM

Clive woz voted #1 , since we felt he was likely to be out of a job soon , so would have the necessary time for I'mIN, if he doesn't get voted top, then perhaps he should consider the Oxfam internship, Gen-Y content editor, then he and Blog Admin could take Oxfam's website to World Champion Status.......

'Appy Weekend

On a serious note is the Oxfam Vote being looked at for fairness by some type of election overseer ?

Oxfam have put out a press release where Bishop Tutu suggests Bush.

OXfam last year wished supporters to email Blair & Brown, the web site last year had frequent mention of Short and Benn.

Hopefully Oxfam will generate lots of money from the Text message cost.I voted for an Oxfam staff member.

I agree with the comment that the whole Poll is Patronising, In fact the money that is being spent on the "I'm IN", well how much is it ? How many Oxfam Staff are diverted to it , Is it not possible for Oxfam to simply do , what they do well , instead of Patronising Donors and supporters with Banal TV adverts ?

Do Oxfam staff not think they could spend Oxfam's time and Money to more effect on Water Sanitation ?

The Patronising VOTE, should be give Oxfam someone they deserve, pehaps Peter Mandelson ?

It's not that bad an Idea ?

Is there a Voting Forum for Oxfam staff on Oxfam's Intranet? Blog Admin did well!

By Anonymous PUB VENUE, March 03, 2006 12:15 PM

I think the vote is silly, emailing a lovey-dovey email to Mandelson would just be pointless, can't Oxfam put something more important on the front page ?

By Anonymous Anonymous, March 06, 2006 11:50 AM
