On tour with Klaxons
Our valiant, voracious volunteer Pete Lusby has just got back from a tour with the truly wonderful Klaxons, helping to Fight Climate Poverty across the UK.
Anyway, without further mucking about, here's Pete's tale of his tour with the band...
"It's been an incredible couple of weeks. I've just come back to reality, after being Oxfam's on-tour coordinator with Klaxons, Simian Mobile Disco and Fist Fite. The tour took in Manchester, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Southampton, Leeds, Cardiff, Birmingham and two dates at Brixton Academy, London (yes, in that order).
I joined the tour in Newcastle, hopped on the production crew tour bus, dropped my bag on my tiny bunk (see pic) and followed the band around the country, campaigning with a group of local volunteers at each venue. With the UN climate change conference in Bali running from 3-14 December, our Fight Climate Poverty petition was really timely.
Klaxons have been described as anything from 'acid-rave sci-fi punk-funk' to the pioneers of the 'art-rock-rave-revolution'. Obviously, 'indie-rock' doesn't quite cut it. Jamie, James, Simon and Steffan Klaxon are all great supporters of Oxfam, and very kindly invited us along to campaign on their tour.
This was a great opportunity for Oxfam, and for me personally. Klaxons put on a great live show for their fans in packed venues, and I got a free gig every night - I was in my element! On top of all that, Klaxons and the other bands on tour were all really nice guys and the production crew took me in as one of the roadies.
Following the Brixton dates, the band headed off with their slim-lined crew to tour Japan, before taking a break from touring to write the follow up to Mercury Music prize-winning debut Myths of the Near Future. I am sure that when they hit the road again it'll be another sell-out tour. Hopefully Oxfam will be invited along again!"
