November 2004
People and Planet 'Shared Planet' Conference, 2004
How would you tackle some of the biggest challenges facing our world today? We went along to ‘Shared Planet’ to have People and Planet open our eyes to the most important issues on earth.
Living up to the hype of being one of the biggest, most vibrant, student conferences in Europe, People & Planet’s annual conference, Shared Planet, took place on 6 November 2004 in London. Nearly 500 student campaigners from all around the UK came together to explore some of the biggest issues in the world – like trade justice, climate change and HIV/AIDS.
Great speakers
With a fantastic line up of speakers including big names like MP Michael Meacher, comedian Mark Steel and environmental campaigner and journalist Mark Lynas, everyone came together to find out what they could do to help build a ‘fair, sustainable…and shared planet’.
A huge range of workshops on fair trade, climate change and the environment, HIV/AIDS and even lessons in the art of campaigning and fundraising, helped to prepare and motivate everyone involved to get ready to take on the world.
Make Trade Fair
Plus, there were plenty of stalls to check out for information and campaigns, including Oxfam’s very own Make Trade Fair, campaigning to make Kraft coffee ‘do their bit’ and pay coffee farmers a decent price. Of course, GenerationWhy was there too, selling our funky t-shirts and meeting all you lovely folk.
