18,000 sign ups - just from Leeds!

A massive, MASSIVE well done to the team of 40 campaigners at Leeds. They got a staggering 18,000 people to pledge their support for Make Trade Fair.

Lets start at the very beginning though and go back to day 1 at Leeds...

My names Anthony Woodhead and I am happy to have my name used but I won't sign up to the site and refused to sign the petition at the Leeds festival itself.

The reason for this is because I believe it to be hypocritical of Oxfam to run such a campaign at an event sponsored by a huge multinational that had a virtual monopoly on drinks in the arena, whilst store holders ran a cartel on food prices.

Oxfam should review some of their policies,(including selling certain items in charity shops which benifit from tax savings), If they really want to back the Make Trade Fair campaign

Hi I’m Sarah and I signed the petition at Leeds.

Multinational companies are a fact of life now, and no one is going to be able to put a stop to them. Trying to get rid of them would be like an ant trying to attack an elephant.

I think the point is, it is vital we make sure they start treating their workers fairly, and the best way to do this is to get as many people as possible to make a noise about it. We need to tell these giants we’re not going to stand for it.

So how do you go about doing that? Well- you find a place packed full of people willing to be open minded about it- somewhere like Leeds festival. Ok, so it may be run by a multinational company, but the very fact that Carling was happy for Oxfam to be there promoting fair trade is a massive achievement.

The fact that they had a monopoly over drinks and the food was expensive was nothing to do with Oxfam- they were just doing what they need to do to get people to see we can do something about unfair trade if enough people back it.
