Now Music4Life has settled nicely into its new home (after celebrating its first anniversary with Rob da Bank, Max Sedgley, The Superimposers and many more back in April) it only seemed right to up the ante a little for June and present an unbeatable line up of artists to support the worthy cause of Make Poverty History.
With thousands of organisations and millions of people around the world supporting Make Poverty History, it is fitting (with all the soul searching going on in the run up to the G8 summit in July) that the musical theme for this event is all about ‘soul’. And for many of the record collectors perusing the record fair on the night, soul is the reason vinyl was invented.
Soul has made more hits, been sampled more times and probably made more people dance than any other type of music, so Oxfam’s Music 4 Life has brought together the finest modern practitioners of soul music in the UK today to show just what all the love is about.
The Pipettes (Live) : Their trademark polka dot dresses, doo-wop anthems and choreographed hand movements have earned them fans across the globe. Think the Ronettes, just better, younger, faster and stronger.
Lucky Soul (Live) : Greenwich based five-piece combine Motown rhythms with heart wrenching melodies delivered by a beautiful chanteuse who will capture everyone’s heart.
DJ Andy Smith : The man credited with giving the band Portishead their unique sound Andy is simply one of the countries finest selectors. A self confessed soul aficionado, Andy was behind the hugely innovative ‘Document’ and eponymous Northern Soul compilations bringing the sound to a new audience.
DJ Keb Darge : Recognised as the prime mover of the current funk renaissance. The man behind the BBE records Deep Funk series and resident at Madame Jo Jo’s.
DJ Dave Ball : The other half of Soft Cell, Dave has always been a soul boy at heart (Tainted Love was originally a little known 60s Northern Soul track!).
DJ Guy Hennigan : The man who revived Northern Soul from the aftermath of the famed Wigan Casino. Along with Keb Darge, Guy brought 'sixties newies' to the Northern Soul scene and remains a vociferous advocate of the quality and not the quantity of soul music.
DJ Spindoctor : Adding an eclectic flavour and modern twist, Rod has made many a dance floor burn with his ability to mix, match and scratch.
