International Youth Day is a UN initiative that has been running since August 2000, when the General Assembly endorsed a recommendation made by the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth.

Every year it has a different focus and this year it’s ‘Tackling Poverty Together: Young People and the Eradication of Poverty’ - and is all about young people’s contribution to society and how living in poverty can effect this.

According to the World Youth Report 2005 there are an estimated 515 million young people across the world living on less than 2 US dollars a day. This is why we will be spending the day showing how angry we are about poverty and celebrating all the things we have done to help overcome poverty and suffering.

Celebrate your contribution to the community by organising a party or performance with your school/college/youth group/friends showcasing what you have done.
Hold an event with your friends focusing on your skills, interests, and aspirations. Remember - today is all about you!
Hold a forum or public discussion at your local youth club to find out how young people in your area are being affected by poverty. Find out what has been done in other communities to tackle poverty successfully.
Talk to your local media about how you can raise awareness of poverty and its effects on young people within your community.
Show how angry you are about poverty by entering our ‘angry face’ competition. You could even win a year’s worth of music.
