Valentine's Day: where's the love?
Dannielle Thompson tells us her thoughts on Valentines Day, the supposed day of love.
This time every year I hear at least one person say how Valentine’s Day is commercial and just another way for people to make money. Regretfully I have to agree, as looking around all I see are posters in shop windows selling pointless things that don’t really mean anything.
OK, it’s a nice feeling getting gifts from someone you love, or even a secret admirer, but what happened to the real meaning behind it all? It just seems to be a day relating to love hearts, roses, chocolates and cheesy gifts.
If I’m honest I don’t actually know where the day stemmed from, but from what I gather it’s about expressing your feelings for someone special in your life - it’s about intimacy, romance, and even friendship.
I think it’s silly how we're made to feel alienated because we don’t have Valentine’s plans, or that we get in our partner’s 'bad books' because our gifts weren’t good enough.
Many of us may say that we don’t let people know that we love them enough, so I think the day should be in aid of that, by spending quality time with those we care about, rather than money.
So instead of boycotting the day of love, perhaps we should just remember what it’s there for.
Happy Valentine’s Day everyone!
