Men in frocks love Leeds Oxfam shop
Tyne Gettings reports back on the Leeds Oxfam shop’s monthly Oxtran event.
Men in wigs and high heels are not what you’d expect to find in your typical Oxfam store on a Friday night, but this was not your typical run-of-the-mill Oxfam store, nor an ordinary night. It was in fact the eminent Oxtran event in Leeds!
Launched in August 2007, Oxtran opens the Oxfam store's doors especially for transvestites, transsexuals and cross-dressers, giving them a place to shop in a secure environment. Sally Stone, the fabulous store manager, came up with the concept as a way to move the large selection of women’s clothes and shoes that she was increasingly left with. Since then the concept has grown and only promises to get bigger.
The quirky staff provided a fantastic energy, which made everyone feel welcome, and guaranteed a laugh with their playful banter. They ensured that every guest had a drink in hand, which I was more than happy with (non-alcoholic of course!).
The store was stocked full of frilly numbers, feather boas and platinum boots, just naming a few of the more irregular items, while Oxfam’s usual array of vintage wear and Fairtrade products were still available. The lovely Samantha Myers, a make-up artist who specialises in transvestites, was also on hand to work her magic. Of course the night would not have been complete without the Oxtran goodie bag, filled with vintage treasures, membership card, badges and heaps of Oxfam materials (which are always good for a light read).
I have to say that the food sampling was my favourite part of the night - especially as it involved Fairtrade chocolate. I must admit that I spent most of my time around the sampling table, trying to be as discrete as possible about just how much I was sampling.
I know it sounds cheesy, but Oxtran goes to show that no matter who you are, Oxfam has something for you. Oxtran is held on the first Friday of every month from 7-9pm in Leeds, at the Duncan Street store. It is a members-only event to ensure customer’s comfort, but membership cards can be collected from the store itself.
