Want to see real change in the world? Become an Oxfam 'Constituency Campaigner'
Roger James an online campaigner at Oxfam
17th Sep 2012
Oxfam South West is seeking out enthusiastic volunteers to join our new and growing movement of 'Constituency Campaigners' who are raising Oxfam's concerns with the politicians in their area to promote real and lasting change. In becoming a Constituency Campaigner with Oxfam you will be making a real difference by campaigning to tackle the causes of poverty and suffering.
Our Constituency Campaigner Programme aims to give you the knowledge, tools and support to make sure your voice is heard and has influence at the highest level. This voluntary role will give you vital skills and experience in being a formidable campaigner and influencing those who hold the power, right there in your own community.
After a visit from Oxfam supporters one influential local MP told Parliament that 'Their representations were a great encouragement. I do not have to choose between being an advocate for some of the most climate-vulnerable people in the poorest countries and representing my constituents, because the former is exactly what my constituents want me to do.'
You can give as much or as little time to this role as you are able, but 1-2 hours a week is a good estimate. We will help you get started with an induction day introducing you to effective political campaigning. After that you will get regular updates and training both on-line and face to face. Our training will provide you with the opportunity to learn from Oxfam staff and other programme participants and build your own campaigning networks.
You will be a Oxfam's key contact for political campaigning in your constituency (we hope to have at least one in each constituency - sometimes we may be able to recruit several in one place and you will be able to work with others) You will build a relationship with your local MP by writing to and meeting your MP or inviting your MP to local events.
At Oxfam we don't wait for others to make change happen- we strive to make it happen ourselves, every day, in over 100 countries around the world. Local grassroots activism is the pulsing heart of that change. It is essential to show that people in local constituencies do care about international development. But we cannot do it alone- we need your help. Constituency campaigners, often working with other organisations, play a
vital part in bringing community voices to their representatives
Right now, Oxfam is calling for political action around a number of vital issues including an international Arms Trade Treaty, the Robin Hood Tax, land and food justice. You as a Constituency Campaigner will become part of these vital campaigns for justice and lasting change
