Oxfam supporters in the Midlands are campaigning at Conservative Party Conference last week calling for an end to land grabs and more investment in small scale farming.
On Sunday, supporters were outside the conference handing out GROW campaign eco bags to delegates and politicians attending. These are always popular with people going to political conferences in need of a bag to carry wads of conference info. The bags had the message 'invest in small-scale farming to end hunger, fight poverty and drive economic growth' printed on the side.
The result of this great campaigning work was that hundreds of people inside the conference centre were carrying Oxfam GROW bags promoting the need to invest more in small-scale agriculture to help end hunger.
Every second, poor countries lose an area of land the size of a football pitch to banks and private investors. Midlands campaigners staged a 'stunt' outside the main conference centre to call for an end to this gross injustice. Supporters dressed as 'land girls' and construction workers enacted a scene where the land girls had their land taken from them. This created a big buzz outside the conference while fliers about the issue were distributed. Find out more about our Land Grabs campaign here: www.oxfam.org.uk/land
Campaigners also attended fringe events throughout the week and tried to ask questions from the floor of these meetings. This action meant that Oxfam's issues were heard by the influential speakers on the panel, and conference goers attending the fringe meetings. The fantastic work of our supporters over the last few days has meant that these crucial issues have been heard by many attending the conference.
