The little sister of Bestival, Camp Bestival has built itself a reputation as the gloriously bourgeois and wonderfully playful family festival of choice. Set on the stunning Dorset coastline in the grounds of Lulworth Castle, it captures something of that medieval magic. Bursting with childish enthusiasm and imagination, Camp Bestival goes beyond the music: there's jousting, falconry, the wall of death, the hippy chic sanctuary of the Bollywood tent... to name just a few activities and attractions.
This year Camp Bestival is introducing the Feast Collective - a foodie haven for those who want something more discerning than standard festival grub. We are promised a taste of "mouth-watering street food traders, artisan food producers, specialty chefs, and organisers of pop-up supper clubs from across the UK, blazing a trail and shaping the future of festival food into something altogether more exciting and scrumptious."
This not to say that music is a sideline. Camp Bestival offers an eclectic mix; this year's headliners include Basement Jaxx and De La Soul to get the whole family dancing. There are also indie darlings the Wedding Present and Jonny Marr. On top of this festival goers can look forward to Sinead O'Connor, Laura Mvula, Public Service Broadcasting and many more.
Fancy stewarding with us at Camp Bestival? We still have space for you to join the team there!
Camp Bestival capitalises on the youthful energy of its clientele, making it a festival for kids and adults alike. Oxfam has been stewarding there since 2009 and we've asked some of our Camp Bestival regulars why they keep coming back:
"It really is a beautiful setting, with a fabulous castle and fireworks. You could even follow your weekend stewarding with a few days at the beach! It has a great family-friendly atmosphere, and is a good first festival for those daunted by the bigger ones like Glastonbury or Bestival" ~ David Harvey
"They always have a great line up with bands or artists that everyone has heard of and it's just fun!"
~ Nicola Graham
"I love to steward at Camp Bestival - a magical kingdom that time has forgotten! The first time I went to Camp Bestival was as a paying customer... [but] having had such a fantastic time there, I now go every year to steward for Oxfam and to enjoy one of the best festival atmospheres this country has to offer! The atmosphere at Camp Bestival is one that is rarely found at the "mainstream" popular festivals; the sense of freedom from the norms of society, combined with the safe and nurturing family atmosphere is not to be missed! The site itself is glorious, with
jousting knights, a fairy-tale castle, and the amazing woods full of mystery and surprise! Not to mention the brilliant Oxfam crew who, as always, make sure that working as a steward is at least as much fun, if not more, than going as a paying customer!" ~ Sophie Scott-Harman
2014 sees the circus come to Camp Bestival, promising a weekend extravaganza of magic, acrobats and moustachioed strongmen. This includes the arrival of the travelling beatnik and performer village Caravanserai, as well as the centre of the circus spectacular: The Greatest Tent on Earth.
