Emergency fundraising ideas

When an emergency hits we have to react fast. Oxfam swiftly delivers aid, support and protection - made possible only by your donations and fundraising. Here are a few ideas for you to start raising money for an emergency straight away.

Fundraising for South Sudan

Right now South Sudan is the worst it's been since 2005. Half of the South Sudanese population does not have enough to eat and the need for aid is urgent.

Our Emergency Fundraising Coordinators have taken on the challenge to raise £10,000 for the humanitarian crisis in South Sudan. Together we know we can make it happen.

Target: £10,000

Total: £2,246.64

Thanks to our fundraising team in Manchester who held a collection in Trafford on 15 December and raised £134 within an hour.

A big thank you to Kathy Keza, in London, who held two Salsa Dance classes and raised £171.64. She has also raised more than £650 through her JustGiving page and she is still going!

Claire Conway, our emergency fundraising coordinator in Oxford, hosted a quiz at Port Mahon in St Clements in November and raised £120. Well done!

* This it the total raised since 1 November for the South Sudan appeal for Oxfam's emergency fund.

Due to severe food shortages, many are surviving on leaves from the 'Lalob' trees which are not very nutritious and believed to cause diarrhoea in children.

Top ideas for emergency fundraising

Collection point

Organise a local collection where there are a lot of generous people. It's simple, but effective. Earlier this year Aaron Crown raised £646 by organising regular collections at a local theatre. His fundraising was boosted by the events organiser announcing his collection before the interval. So make sure you announce that you are fundraising for Oxfam. You can download everything you need to set up an eye-catching donation point.

Host a quiz

The easiest and most effective way is to contact a locally run pub quiz and ask them to donate the money raised at one week's quiz to your emergency fundraising. Combine this event with a raffle and raise an extra £100. You could get in touch with local shops and businesses for free raffle prizes. Alternatively you could organise your own quiz. Christmas wrapping

The holidays will soon be here! Set up a Christmas wrapping stall in a busy shopping centre and offer to wrap people's Christmas presents for a small donation to Oxfam. Each penny added to your pot will save lives. If you get lots of volunteers on board and run the event on several weekends you could raise as much as group of volunteers in Scotland did last year - £7500!
