Oxfam youth action groups

680x150

Oxfam Youth Action Groups plan and organize their own fun, creative activities to raise awareness about global poverty and contribute to Oxfam's campaigns.

If you're in school or 6th form college in England and want to be part of the movement to overcome poverty and suffering, then Oxfam Youth Action Groups are for you.

Oxfam will help you put your ideas into action and make them a reality, whether that's holding a school assembly or event, getting in your local paper, meeting your MP or going to parliament.

In the past year Youth Action Groups have organised their own Oxjam gigs, staged a land grab at a neighbouring school, spoken in parliament, and arranged for their MP to come into their school.

Registered groups receive:

  • A Youth Action Group guide
  • A termly newsletter including two new campaign challenges, with supporting activities
  • Termly visits to a group meeting from a member of the Oxfam Youth and Schools team
  • Invitations to regional and national Oxfam events
  • On-going phone and email support from the Oxfam Youth and Schools team.

So get a group of your friends together, grab a teacher to support you, and get in touch. To register, you will need to fill in and return a registration form (PDF, 87 KB).

Youth Achievement Award

To help you get recognition for all the great work you do you can sign up to do your Youth Achievement Award with Oxfam.

About the Youth Achievement Award

The Youth Achievement Award (YAA) is a way of you getting recognition for the great work you do as part of an Oxfam Youth Action Group.

It's accredited by ASDAN, meaning that many employers, colleges and universities will see it as a valuable award to have.

Your YAA is made of a number of 15 hour challenges, which can include preparation, travel time and research as well as the time actually spent doing your planned activities.

Levels of Award

You can choose which level of award to go for, depending on the role you take on as part of your group and the number of 15 hour challenges you complete:

  • The Bronze award is for those taking part in activities along with other young people. It consists of four 15 hour challenges.
  • The Silver award is for those helping to plan, lead or organize activities with other young people. It consists of six 15 hour challenges.
  • The Gold award is for those leading and organising activities involving other young people. It consists of seven 15 hour challenges.

Support from Oxfam

To enable you to take part, Oxfam can help your school to register with YAA.

Oxfam will provide you with challenge sheets, based around our campaigns issues, which will help you plan your 15 hour challenges as a group.

As you work through your challenges, you will need to collect evidence (such as photo's and worksheets) of the work you've done and use this to compile a portfolio. You can complete your portfolio online.

Oxfam's Youth and Schools Team will work with you and your school to help you compile your evidence and submit it for approval.

If you'd like to take part, please indicate this on your Oxfam Youth Action Group registration form.
