Activism Assistant (Manchester)

Context:

The Oxfam North of England Campaigns Team focuses on influencing regional political structures, supporting regional activism and building strategic alliances. It does this by raising the profile and understanding of Oxfam's exciting campaigns (GROW & Health and Education For All), through regional media, community projects, special events, supporting campaigning groups and work with youth and schools. In 2013 we will be focussing on a coalition campaign working on tax, transparency, land grabbing and aid in particular.

Frequency: Up to 3 days per week,2 days office based in Manchester, 1 flexible day or evening for events, for 6 months.

Key responsibilities:

  • Recruiting, training and supporting volunteer campaigners so they can raise more awareness about global justice issues
  • Securing Oxfam's campaigning presence at some larger regional events
  • Helping to co-ordinate the regional campaigning at festivals/ larger music events/ important recruitment events in our region
  • Supporting some regional administration, monitoring, evaluation and learning of this work and especially the specific projects you would manage within it
  • Providing support for national campaigning events and initiatives where appropriate
  • Using a range of on and offline tools to share good practice and create a sense of community/network throughout the region.

Skills and competencies:

  • Ability to plan, organise and manage a complex workload
  • Excellent communication
  • Effectively manages own time and works to tight deadlines
  • Excellent leadership skills, including the ability to motivate, engage and mobilise people and/or team
  • Initiative to come up with creative solutions to problems
  • Passion to get involved in Oxfam's campaigns and commitment to its aims
  • Experience of organising and running events/ project management would be helpful

  • They will learn more about how an NGO like Oxfam works to try to engage more people in justice issues and be consulted for their creative ideas.
  • They will learn more about communications and have to and represent Oxfam in the media/ social media.
  • They will learn more about training and facilitation.
  • They will learn more about volunteer support and recruitment.
  • They will learn more about how to present complex messages to a variety of audiences.
  • They will learn more about event organising and project management.
  • They will learn more about the political system and how to lobby politicians.
