Intern Assistant Manager (Kilburn)

Context:

The Oxfam shop in Kilburn is a community shop with a high quality fashion offer also selling books, music, homewares and children's wear. The shop has a part time shop manager and for the rest of the week is run by a volunteer team. The successful applicant will Intern at the shop for 4 months, learning all aspects of the shop manager's role and by the end of the 4 month period the intern will have been trained to the level of a deputy shop manager in core retail skills, visual merchandising, volunteer management, stock control, they will have taken responsibility for one product department in the store and will have had experience of managing the store during the shop manager's absence. They will have been trained in the financial aspects of the shop including analysing the sales/ space relationship and budget forecasting for the next financial year. This will be a great stepping stone for anyone wishing to gain experience in retail or in people management.

Frequency: Up to 3 days per week, 9.45am until 6.30pm for 4 months.

Key responsibilities:

  • Getting to know a team of volunteers from varying socio/economic demographics and learning to successfully communicate with them in a professional retail environment
  • Being trained in retail management, stock control and visual merchandising with the goal of managing the retail environment to increase sales and profitability
  • Being trained in analysing the Income & Expenditure report and the sales/ space budget in order to make the shop space as profitable as possible and to measure results of own decisions in the shop
  • Taking on responsibility for one specific product department in the shop, managing the stock, sales and the volunteers who work in this department
  • By the end of the 4 months, after full training, the intern will have had the opportunity to manage the shop during the shop manager's absence

Skills and competencies:

  • The successful applicant will enjoy working with people and will be able to confidently and empathetically communicate with a diverse workforce of varying ages, experience and abilities
  • The successful applicant will want to gain experience in retail and will understand the importance of excellent customer service
  • The successful candidate will be numerate and willing to learn the financial aspects involved in managing a shop, including cash handling, (such as cashing up)
  • The successful applicant will understand that the ultimate aim of the internship is for them to be trained to a level where they are confident to be left to run the shop in the shop manager's absence. This they will be expected to do after full training
  • The successful applicant will be able to commit to up to3 days per week, 9.15am until 5.15pm, for 4 months
