Voluntary Assistant Manager (Brighton)

Context:

This position is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in a high performing retail environment. Our shop is situated in the centre of the busy city of Brighton, we are a specialist second hand fashion outlet. Out of 700 Oxfam shops in the country we are the seventh most profitable. We are looking for someone with enthusiasm and drive to come and join our team.

We are very unusual, we run a unique system that sources and distributes stock not only for our own shop but also for other Oxfam shops in Sussex. We process approximately three tonnes of fabric stock per week, that which cannot be sold gets sent to Oxfam's recycling plant Wastesaver. We generate a high income from sales in our shop specialising in designer and upmarket high street men and woman's fashion.

Frequency: 3 days per week, working pattern to be agreed with the shop managers. We ask for a commitment of at least 3 months.

Key responsibilities:

  • Manage the shop in the shop manage's absence.
  • Help the shop managers  in, leading, managing and planning for the development of a shop team.
  • Supervise volunteers and organize recruitment
  • Assisting with the development of solutions to problems and taking actions to solve routine problems
  • Maximize the income from donations, new products and Gift Aid
  • Implement Trading Division's accounting policies and banking procedures
  • To ensure that shop activities reflect Oxfam values and beliefs
  • Contribute as a member of the team to achieve agreed objectives to required standards

Skills and competencies:

  • An interest in retail and merchandising.
  • The ability to use your own initiative and think creatively.
  • Have excellent interpersonal skills. 
  • Have an interest and some knowledge in Fashion and the retail industry. 
  • Is willing to learn how to apply commercial knowledge to second hand clothing market.
  • Is committed to the role and prepared to take on responsibility.
