Manifestos: what we're calling for
Together we can push politicians to put poverty-busting goals at the heart of their manifestos.
There are many goals we want to see in every party manifesto, but here are the most important:
Aid
The UK made a promise to give 0.7 per cent of its annual income in aid by 2013. It’s time to deliver. Parties must uphold this commitment and make sure poor countries get the resources they need to tackle poverty and inequality.
Women’s Rights
The majority of people living in poverty are women and girls. Political parties must address this injustice by promoting women as leaders and decision-makers on the world stage. They must also commit to ending the global maternal health scandal – every day, nearly 1,500 women die worldwide in pregnancy and childbirth – parties must support more aid for basic services and promote women’s right to free health care.Climate Change
Climate change is happening right now and it’s already hitting poor people hardest. The UK, and Scotland and Wales must cut their emissions by at least 80 per cent by 2050. And parties must commit to generating the massive funds needed to support developing countries to adapt to the effects of climate change.
Protecting civilians
The UK must be a world leader in protecting people whose lives are threatened by conflict and crimes against humanity. Parties need to support and uphold the UN agreement to protect civilians.
