Fundraise for Haiti

[Photo credit: REUTERS/Jorge Silva, courtesy of alertnet.org]Thanks to the generosity of the public and other donors, Oxfam's work helping those affected by the earthquake in Haiti is now fully funded. But we still need funds for our emergency response in 25 other countries worldwide.

Fundraising ideas

Organise a collection

The Royal Mint estimates that there is £380 million worth of loose change in homes in the UK.

At work

Ask your co-workers for their change as they leave each day.

  • Send round a running total, nothing motivates like progress.
  • If you have a large meetings or work socials – take your collection box along.
  • Get visitors to donate too.

At your local shopping centre

Why not contact your local shopping centre or theatre and see if they will allow you to hold a collection? You will be amazed at how generous people can be, and your hard work will improve the lives of the estimated 3 million Haitians in desperate need of aid.

Spare change collection

Secretly most people know that they’ll never get their spare change to the bank. Explain how these tiny coins can make a difference, not just collect dust.

  • Ask your employer to give matched donations, this will really motivate people.
  • Get office departments to compete against each other. Who can weigh in with the biggest change collection?
  • This idea will work just as well outside of work – for example at church or at a school fete.
Organise an event

You could organise a cake sale, a raffle or a pub quiz.

Cake sale

  • Try and include a savory option - not everyone has a sweet tooth.
  • Try and increase the number of bakers you can recruit by sending round recipes in advance.
  • Boost your collection with a buy-two-get-one-free offer.
  • (And we wouldn't be Oxfam if we didn't encourage you to use Fair Trade ingredients where possible).

Friday film night

Invite your friends over for a movie, and ask them to donate the money that they would have spent to help people in Haiti. The following tips will make the most of this fundraising opportunity:

  • Gift Aid it! Remember to ask everyone who pays UK tax to tick the gift aid box on our sponsorship form. This will increase their donation by nearly a third.
  • Remember to have an interval – and sell your guests popcorn and ice cream.
  • If you’re inviting real film buffs, you could put on a film quiz after the movie - and charge a small entry fee.
Change what you wear

It’s also a great way to get a lot of people involved.

Demin day or Football-top Friday

Get permission for everyone at work to wear their jeans on a Friday, and ask them to pay £1 for the privilege. So your office already wears jeans? How about football tops instead?

  • Offer a prize for the best effort.
  • Fine people who don't take part.
  • Organise a football forecast competition for the weekend’s matches: £5 to enter, £20 to the winner.

There are all sorts of ideas that have made money for Oxfam in the past. And just to prove it's worth going the extra mile, here’s a £115 example.
