Thank you for registering to volunteer at this year's London Marathon. This year Oxfam hopes to raise over £100,000 from this event - money that can have a real impact on our programmes around the world. Not only will you be at the London Marathon, you'll be part of it - creating a unique experience for our runners and ensuring they have an amazing day.

Volunteers - Role Descriptions

There are several roles available:


Marathon Cheering Point

Be in the thick of the action – at the roadside cheering on Oxfam’s committed runners. Our runners have trained hard for their Marathon journey, so why not play a vital role and support them along their way. You will see their faces light up as you cheer them along and you’ll be so pleased you experienced the Marathon first hand without having to run the 26.2miles! (We have Cheering Points in the Docklands and near Tower Hill.)

Key timings:

Time Event
09:00 Early arrival at cheering points to ensure we are visible to our runners. Times will vary depending upon location:
Throughout the day Elite runners pass the cheering point – your chance to see the famous names.

Club runners pass the cheering point.

Main crowd of runners pass the cheering point- this is the key time for cheering Oxfam runners.
Approx. 16:00 Help pack up and leave

Marathon cheering point shifts:

Shift 1: Sunday 09:00 – 17:00
All day support with set up, all main tasks and packing up.

Shift 2: Sunday 11:00 – 17:00
Half day with all main tasks and packing up.

Shift 3: Sunday 13:00 – 17:00
Available during peak period to do all main tasks.

Marathon Post-Race Runners' Reception

Volunteering opportunities at the post-race reception are now full. You can still be a part of Team Oxfam on Marathon Day by signing up to volunteer at a Cheering Point.

You will be involved in setting up and running Oxfam’s reception at the British Academy, near The Mall.  This will include:

Welcome & registration: Welcoming runners and guests.  Collecting weary runners from outside, cheering as they arrive and registering their details.

  • Setting up venue: Unpacking, set up of displays, catering, banners & signs.
  • Escorting runners to showers. (5 min walk from British Academy)
  • Supporting the massage team: Booking in sessions and escorting runners to massage area.
  • Talking to runners and their invited guests: Enthusing about their achievements!
Directions: Help with directions and answering general questions about the event.

13:30 First runner arrives
17:00 Reception closes

Marathon post-race reception shifts:

FULL - Shift 1: Sunday 11:00 – 18:00
All day support with set up, all main tasks and packing up.

FULL - Shift 2: Sunday 13:00 – 18:00
Half day with all main tasks and packing up.
