Context:
The Book Project Team within the Trading Division works to promote Oxfam’s books business through our ~700 shops and online. This dynamic and innovative team delivered a nationwide book festival, Oxfam Bookfest, in July 2009 comprising more than 300 events in 14 days.
This role will involve working within a volunteer-led team, supporting the books project manager to develop content on our Talking Books web pages (www.oxfam.org.uk/books), particularly blog content, and assist with ideas for developing the site and increasing traffic as a whole as we prepare for Bookfest 2010.
Key Responsibilities:
- Producing and assisting with online content by working with the volunteer-led online group, project manager and online team.
- Gathering content for the website including quotes, photographs and case studies, over the phone and at events as appropriate.
- Researching and making use of free promotional channels such as local ‘What’s On’ websites and other internet spaces, e.g., facebook, twitter etc.
- Researching and attending regional and other meetings with the Oxfam shop network.
Skills and competences:
- Excellent project management skills including the ability to manage own time, prioritise effectively and meet deadlines.
- Sound creative judgement.

Volunteer Finance Assistant in Newcastle
The Newcastle Finance Office is part of the Trading Division of Oxfam. Oxfam has a network of c.770 shops throughout the UK and Newcastle office deals with about 400 of them. The main role of the Finance Office is to assist with the recording and processing of the shop income and/or associated expenditure for the Oxfam shops.
Commitment:
At least 6 hours a week for a minimum of 3 months.
The office is open Monday to Thursday 9am to 5.15pm and 9am to 5pm on a Friday.
Responsibilities:
- Checking and entering data from income returns/logging and filing shop returns
- Checking accuracy of invoices and processing them for payment
- Problem solving and dealing with queries
- Customer Care and phone answering/processing mail in/ assisting with mail outs/ maintaining and operating databases
Key skills:
No previous experience needed as full training is provided. However some or all of the following would be an advantage:
- Good basic numeracy and attention to detail
- A basic knowledge of or a willingness to learn IT skills
- Organised approach to work/ good team player
