Youth Board members

Location:

Boards will centre around regional offices in: Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, London.

This is a two year commitment and you will need to be based within easy travelling distance of the board you are applying to join from July 2010 until July 2012.

Time spent on Board:

July 2010 until July 2012.

Context:

As a member of a Youth Board, you’ll play a central, active role in Oxfam’s youth campaigning work.

You don’t need to know anything about campaigning already, you just need the energy and motivation to learn all about it, and the get-up-and-go to put ideas into action. Being a Youth Board member will help you build your skills in campaigning, communications and teamwork. You’ll get an insider’s look at a big UK charity and have the opportunity to be part of exciting events as a youth representative of Oxfam.

Age range:

You must be aged 16-18 on 1 July 2010.

What you'll do:

  1. Take a lead on campaigning projects and activities in your region. A successful campaign needs people to get excited about it and help other people join in. It needs people with their own ideas and the get up and go to make them happen.

  2. Help develop new ideas for projects, events or activities that involve young people in Oxfam’s priority campaigns. In 2010, priority campaign issues are likely to include climate change, health and education.

  3. Help to represent Oxfam at events. This could mean: attending meetings with other charities, taking opportunities to speak to politicians about campaign issues, or working alongside Oxfam staff to help deliver an event for other young people.

  4. Advise Oxfam’s Youth & Schools team and give feedback on the best ways to involve young people in our campaigning work.

What we are looking for:

We are actively looking for people from a wide variety of backgrounds to join Oxfam Youth Boards.

  1. An enthusiasm to get involved in Oxfam’s campaigning work. No previous experience of campaigning is required and you don’t have to know lots about international issues. What you do need is a genuine enthusiasm to learn about both.

  2. A proactive, get-up-and-go approach. Campaigning is about getting things moving, making things happen and having an impact, so we’re looking for people with natural get-up-and-go and a ‘can do’ attitude.

  3. Excellent teamwork skills. You’ll work with staff, volunteers and other members of Oxfam Youth Boards so you’ll need to be able to show us you understand how to work with others in an effective way (e.g. through experience working on group projects at school, or being part of a sports club or music group).

  4. Good communications skills. We’ll work with you to develop your communication skills further, but you’ll need to already be comfortable thinking about different audiences, how to get a message across, and speak and write well about difficult issues (e.g. climate change).

  5. A creative approach and the ability to contribute new ideas. You might or might not think of yourself as ‘creative’ when it comes to art or music lessons, but as a member of a Youth Board you will need to be able to think outside the box, give new suggestions and enjoy finding solutions

Application process:

Please download and complete this application form:

Youth Board application form. (Word document, 107KB)

Please return your completed application form to youthteam@oxfam.org.uk by Sunday 2 May.

Please note that this is a non-standard application form and we won’t accept applications using the standard Oxfam Volunteer Application Form.
