Our short-term voluntary internships are an ideal opportunity to gain experience in a successful NGO whilst contributing to alleviating poverty and suffering. Our short-term voluntary internships generally comprise a single role that encompasses working on a specialised project. You will become very skilled in your role and gain insight into how an NGO operates.

Brand Assistant

Location:

Oxfam House, Oxford

Commitment:

6 months (minimum 3 days a week – ideally one person – the three days could be spread over the whole week. E.g. just mornings)

Corporate Communications

Oxfam has recently refreshed its brand and, as a result, is generating specific brand communications and placing more emphasis on alignment of all other communications to benefit from and give support to the brand.

The brand assistant will work with the Brand manager on the strategic and creative execution of the Oxfam brand across the organisation with particular focus on delivering brand specific communications.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Liaise between brand team and client departments within Oxfam (Campaigns, Fundraising, Trading etc), particularly dealing with requests regarding correct logo and brand guidelines usage.
  • Assisting with development of brand communications: liasing with external creative and media agencies; managing process and timings; collating feedback; managing sign-off and delivery; preparation of research materials.
  • Collating the communications calendar for the whole organisation
  • Internal communications of external brand communications and results, including regular reviews of creative work
  • General administration: meetings, filing, archiving etc
Skills and competences:
  • Natural inclination for communications and creative work
  • Self-starter with confidence to use own initiative where appropriate
  • Motivated and organised person, able to keep track of information
  • Good computer skills (Word, Excel and Powerpoint if possible) and experience of using online research facilities.
  • Good interpersonal skills - comfortable liasing with many people from all divisions and at different levels

Resources Marketing Assistant

Location:

Oxfam House, Oxford

Commitment:

Minimum 3 days a week, from August 08 to January 09.

This role is office based. Standard working hours are Monday-Friday, 9-5.15pm- flexible volunteering hours can be agreed.

Oxfam’s Education & Youth team works to enable and empower young people to be active global citizens. This forms a key part of Oxfam’s work to build a movement for change to overcome poverty and suffering.

This post is a pivotal role in the Oxfam Education Publishing Team and provides the opportunity to work alongside other members of the team in producing, promoting and distributing our high quality educational resources.

Key Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will play a key role in the production and marketing of our Catalogue for Schools 2009

  • Assisting with the administration of the Catalogue production process.
  • Liaising with publishers to ensure timely and accurate information is received.
  • Assisting with the development of effective distribution and promotion systems, and identifying new opportunities for promotion of the Catalogue.
  • Undertaking marketing research into Oxfam’s key audiences and other education providers
  • Additional support to Educational Publishing team as agreed
Skills and competences:
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to manage multiple projects to meet deadlines
  • Sound IT skills including Excel, Word, email, and web (training on specific applications e.g. Lotus notes, will be provided if necessary)

  • Ability to work independently without direct supervision as well as part of a team

  • Working with Oxfam GB’s Internet and Intranet teams in order to ensure system will be compatible with Oxfam’s existing technology.
  • Promoting the creation of relevant opportunities for highly-skilled volunteers within Oxfam GB.
  • Working flexibly to requests from Oxfam’s Volunteering Team.
  • Initially managing and maintaining system once it is established.

  • Seeing the project through to production and implementation of the new tools, providing guidelines for managers of volunteers in using these.
  • Working closely with the Volunteer Recognition Manager to ensure smooth and successful roll-out of the new recognition programme.

Internship Advisor

The Volunteering Team runs Oxfam’s Internship Scheme, which has earned a place in The Times’ Top 100 Graduate Employers guide.

The voluntary role of Internship Advisor is an exciting post that needs some one who is organised, a fantastic communicator and not afraid of a challenge. The role will support anything between 10 to 30 interns and their managers who are based cross divisionally in our UK regional offices and Head Office.

Key Responsibilities:

Projects

  • Establish and maintain a database of interns in order to aid analysis of data on Oxfam’s internship scheme and improve contact mechanisms.
  • Research and review inductions for interns and propose improvements and alternatives.

Ongoing

  • Manage communications regarding internships including the Internship email account and online recruitment through the website, in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Promote internships externally through building relationships with universities, careers fairs and other organisations.
  • Arrange and co-facilitate the centrally run induction courses for interns.
  • Arrange a gathering for interns once a month.

Media and Communications Assistant

Location:

As a team of four Campaigners, the Oxfam Midlands Team focuses its efforts on influencing regional political structures, building strategic alliances and supporting activism via raising the profile of Oxfam’s campaigns (currently Health and Education for all, Fight Climate Poverty, Trade Campaign & Conflict) through the regional media.  Throughout all our work we aim to affect policy and practice change in order to improve the lives of the people Oxfam works with in developing countries.

High quality media contact work is central to ensuring that Oxfam meets its campaigning objectives: it is vital to raise the profile of Oxfam Campaigns to access key target audiences and has an important role to play in bringing our issues to the attention of regional radio, TV and press. The media in turn plays a key role in influencing decision-makers to effect policy and practice change to improve the lives of the people Oxfam works with in the developing world.

Key Responsibilities:
  • To send out news releases and to follow up by phone/fax/letter/email as appropriate
  • To review, adopt, update and maintain the media database, on which training will be offered.  
  • To assist in the writing and sending out of the regional campaigns newsletter
  • To support media needs of campaigns with any necessary tasks including researching, building and promoting good relationships with journalists
  • To be responsible for maintaining excellent media files, electronically and on paper, and keep accurate and up-to-date records of media output achieved.
Skills and competences:
  • Confidence, good persuasive skills and good communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Ability to assimilate information about the issues we work on and to present in an accessible, easily communicable format
  • Sound administrative skills and experience using a variety of IT packages and databases, especially Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Ability to work individually to deadline as well as part of a high performing team, remaining calm under pressure
  • Commitment to Oxfam’s organisational purpose (desirable)
  • Experience of working with the media (desirable)
