Oxfam's Humanitarian Programme

Poverty has many different causes and needs to be understood and dealt with in its entirety. That's why our approach is based on delivering one programme that integrates humanitarian aid, development and campaigning work - with a focus on livelihoods, education and health - reducing vulnerability to natural disasters and conflict, ensuring the right to be heard, and promoting gender equality and freedom from discrimination.

Violent conflict and natural disasters continue to cause widespread suffering around the world, and Oxfam plans to spend 47 per cent of its total programme expenditure responding to this.

Our humanitarian programme is managed by regional teams all over the world. But we also have a dedicated team of specialists based in the Humanitarian Department in Oxfam's headquarters in Oxford to provide management, technical and logistical support in the following areas:

  • Advising all eight of our regions across the globe on humanitarian programming, including disaster preparedness and response
  • Supporting each region in responding to humanitarian crises by deploying HSPs and recruiting other staff
  • Leading programme development work in key areas such as water and sanitation, health promotion, food security and livelihoods and protection
  • Advocating on humanitarian issues to the wider world
  • Delivering support on logistics, HR and finance
