The Project
Violence against women is one of the major causes of poverty for women and their children. It denies them choices and opportunities in almost every aspect of their lives. Oxfam is committed to ending poverty and ensuring that women and men have the same opportunities. We support the We Can campaign in countries across South Asia, and in Bangladesh this launched in 2004.
Project aims
Working with four key partners, we will carry out a wide range of activities, bringing the campaign message – that violence against women is not acceptable – to an estimated two million people. The ultimate goal is to reduce the violence and discrimination that blights the lives of women and girls across every class, religion, ethnicity and caste. The project will:
- Mobilise community activists and provide them with campaigning resources in order to create an environment conducive to public dialogue on violence against women
- Reduce social acceptance of violence, by creating a fundamental shift in people’s attitudes and behaviour
- Hold public events in order to change prevailing attitudes about domestic violence, and the role of women, at family, community and national level
