The Project

This project will ensure the testimonies of poor people are heard by negotiators from rich and poor countries participating in international climate discussions at the United Nations (UN) in December 2009. Here, the international community will outline a post-2012 global deal to tackle climate change, agreeing actions and commitments for cutting emissions, encouraging low-carbon development and helping countries to adapt.

Project aims

The project is part of Oxfam’s wider strategy to put pressure on decision-makers through a global social movement and, working with poor communities, to adapt to cope with the effects of climate change.

The specific aims of this project are to:

  • Increase community level awareness of climate change and how they will need to adapt their lives
  • Present powerful personal testimonies and evidence that demonstrate to decision-makers the tangible effects of climate change on the lives of poor people
  • Build a healthy civil society at national level that engages with their government on climate issues
  • Provide a global platform for poor people affected by climate change, so their voices will be heard by decision-makers attending national and United Nations negotiations
