The Project

Oxfam will work with communities in Kinshasa and Mbandaka to renovate schools in extremely poor condition – making huge improvements to the learning environment in the classrooms. This project will also support Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs) and civil society organisations, in five provinces across the DRC, to be organised, coordinated and effective. They will be trained to monitor the education services, and helped to put pressure on the government - and schools – to improve the quality of education.

Project aims

This project aims to:

  • Work with communities to renovate classrooms and improve the sanitation in schools
  • Train head teachers and local education authorities to manage schools in a transparent and participatory way
  • Support PTAs in their role to ensure equal access to education for all, and to ensure good management of schools
  • Support civil society organisations1 to demand accountability in the use of education funds, and lobby for policies that will improve the chances of both girls and boys of getting a good education

1These include teachers’ unions, national parent committee associations and education organisations.
