The Project

This work forms an integral part of Oxfam’s wider pastoral programme in the Horn of Africa. It runs alongside other projects in the Somali region, which are improving the ecology of the area as well as helping pastoralists to improve their basic services.

This project responds to the highest priority need expressed by the community. It will provide a reliable supply of water under conditions of increasing drought through the construction of a borehole in the Harshin District, benefiting at least 54,000 people.

Project aims

This project will:

  • Provide a reliable year-round supply of water for people and their livestock in the Harshin District
  • Help women take a more active leadership role in the community
  • Tap in to the availability of water to enable women to generate an income and improve the nutrition of lactating animals
  • Use the borehole as an opportunity to raise people’s awareness about important health issues and the harm caused by some traditional practices
