The Project
Oxfam has been working with poor people in Haiti on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) since 2003. By becoming better prepared and having a plan of action for when disaster strikes, people’s lives, homes and possessions can be saved. This will help to stop the downward spiral of poverty that such events can cause.
We work with the Haitian Red Cross and local DRR committees as our partners in order to develop the long-term plans Haiti needs.
Project aims
This project will:
- Establish emergency shelters in remote parts of the country, where people can be safe and emergency equipment can be stored throughout the year
- Build the capacities of local committees and communities to coordinate emergency responses
- Support local communities to identify the risks they face and mitigate or reduce their vulnerability to disasters
- Develop an awareness-raising kit so that everyone is alert to the dangers they face and how they can keep themselves and others safe
- Strengthen the national system for emergency response by creating and training civil protection committees at provincial and community level
