The Project

Oxfam and our local partner OCDIH have already shown that small-scale agriculture can dramatically improve the lives of rural people in Honduras. Oxfam has been working with communities in these rural areas since 1999. This project is in the third year of a three-year plan, focusing specifically on Copan department. It is the middle phase of a wider 10-year programme aiming to transform small-scale agriculture throughout western Honduras.

Project aims

This year the project will:

  • Increase productivity and profitability for those involved in small-scale agriculture by teaching sustainable farming methods. This will also help to diminish the negative impact that agriculture can have on the environment
  • Enhance farmers’ awareness and technical skills with sustainable farming in order to reduce costs on purchasing seeds, fertiliser and pesticide
  • Help farmers to increase their incomes by focusing on crops that are earning the highest prices in local markets
  • Establish savings and loans schemes in order to provide cheap credit for rural families to invest in their farms
  • Strengthen civil society groups’ abilities to influence decision-makers towards actions that will reduce poverty in their communities
