The Project

Cotton-industry workers in the southern Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka contend with low wages and poor working conditions. In the final year of this three-year project, Oxfam will continue to support: cotton farmers; handloom weavers and garment workers to have a better quality of life.

Project aims

The aim is to improve conditions for workers across the supply chain by:

  • Encouraging cotton farmers to take up organic farming through training sessions and local campaigns
  • Raising awareness about the conditions faced by handloom weavers, and supporting them to secure better prices through training on new dyeing and design techniques
  • Assisting farmers and weavers to certify their produce as organic and Fair Trade, and to collectively sell their produce through registered trading companies
  • Working with female garment factory workers to better understand their labour rights and negotiate with employers for better working conditions
  • Supporting partners and community leaders to advocate for improved conditions, and ensuring that gender concerns are fully addressed throughout the project
