The Project
Oxfam has been improving education in Turkana since 2001. We helped establish Turkana Education For All (TEFA), to coordinate the efforts of communities, organisations and authorities. Oxfam also pioneered ‘mobile education’ for children of nomadic families.
The demand for the mobile schools is growing. We want to expand this work to ensure that all children in Turkana get the life-long benefits of a decent education.
Project aims
This project will significantly improve the enrolment rate and the standard of education in Turkana. It will:
- Introduce children to education, prepare them for primary school, and increase their chances of being enrolled in primary school – through pre-schools
- Campaign on the right to an education for all children – especially girls and children with special needs
- Support and improve mobile schools to enable children from pastoralist families to regularly attend school
- Improve academic performance through training teachers and quality assessments of schools across Turkana
- Increase the efficiency of the management and coordination of educational services in Turkana
