The Project
This project is an expansion of our existing work to improve the health of poor families in the Bourem district of Gao. Working with communities and local authorities, we will dramatically improve the availability and quality of drinking water and sanitation facilities, and ensure that community members can manage and maintain these facilities.
A health awareness campaign, run by trained volunteers and health workers, will create a long-term improvement in people’s knowledge and practice of good health and hygiene. By engaging with the government, we will ensure that low-cost technologies are adopted in national policies, ultimately benefiting small rural communities throughout Mali.
Project aims
The project aims to improve the health of approximately 45,000 people. Using low-cost, appropriate technology, and working closely with communities and local authorities, we will:
- Improve access to clean, drinkable water with regular monitoring to ensure water quality
- Improve sanitation facilities in the region’s health centres
- Encourage safe practices through a large-scale public health and hygiene promotion campaign
- Enable community organisations and local authorities to continue the development and management of water and sanitation facilities and public health activities
