The Project
This project is working with rural communities, including nomadic herders and farmers, in Bourem district. It will bring 15 remaining primary schools in Bamba and Temera communities into an Oxfam schools improvement programme run in the Gao region over a number of years. Activities will continue to be run through local NGOs and education authorities, schools management committees (SMC), and mothers’ associations.
Project aims
Despite decentralisation, local government is still unable to meet the region’s needs regarding school infrastructure, desks, textbooks, libraries – and even basic water, and sanitation – because of lack of finance and trained people. So this project will focus on greater community involvement in providing basic services, and we will increase our support for the Malian authorities and local citizens to provide quality education to all children. It will:
- Offer specialist training and support to retain children in school – particularly girls
- Improve school infrastructure, water and hygiene facilities
- Provide professional training and support for teachers
- Encourage greater community involvement in governing schools and in petitioning authorities for greater support
