The Project

With your help, we can make a big difference. Alongside our partners1, we have already put pressure on the government to shape a National Strategic Plan that will tackle the slow provision of treatment. We must now tackle the extreme poverty that is making women particularly vulnerable. Historically women have been seen to be of less value than men – a belief that has often led to violence that puts women and girls at greater risk of HIV and AIDS.

Project aims

This project will:

  • Place people living with HIV and AIDS (PLWHA) at the heart of how we learn and what we change – for all the community
  • Empower women and girls to understand their sexual rights, which will help them protect themselves against HIV and AIDS
  • Increase the involvement of men in debate and education to challenge the attitudes, values and beliefs with respect to women
  • Improve access to healthcare, treatment and support for PLWHA, especially women and girls
  • Build stronger links between community based organisations working directly on HIV and AIDS issues and global advocacy organisations
1 Oxfam works with various partners in the region to ensure the long-term success of the project: Thusanang Advice Centre, People Opposing Women Abuse (POWA), Let Us Grow, Pheko ka Kopanelo and Sonke Gender Justice.
