The Project
Oxfam has been helping people in Western Zambia to cope with cyclical floods and droughts since 2005. This project aims to address underlying causes of vulnerability in the area such as low levels of public health and awareness of safe hygiene practices.
In the second year of a three-year project, Oxfam will continue working with Mongu and Kaoma councils as our principal partners, as well as local NGO partners People’s Participation Services and Keepers Zambia Foundation. By providing water, sanitation and hygiene services, the project will achieve tangible improvements in the health status of over 46,000 people living in these areas.
Project aims
This year the project will:
- Drill new boreholes and construct new wells, allowing many more people to access clean water
- Construct new latrines in villages, homes and schools, significantly reducing the potential for spreading disease
- Raise awareness about safe hygiene practices, which will directly lead to higher levels of health in schools and communities
- Train local people to construct and maintain water and sanitation systems, keeping knowledge and skills within their communities
