Meet Ly

Nothing matters more to Changsrey Ly than keeping her two daughters well-fed, clothed, and in school. The basics of a decent start in life. No mum would settle for less.

This means sacrifices. Ly sells rice cakes from a roadside café in Cambodia’s capital, Phnom Penh, cooking every hour she can to make ends meet. Life’s a struggle, but she’s always got by. Until now.

Ly's problem

In the last year, Ly’s costs – flour, rice, cooking oil – have doubled, putting her business in jeopardy. So Ly took out a modest loan to tide her over the worst of it. The problem is, prices haven’t come down, and her debts haven’t gone away.

Ly's choice

She needs more money just to put food on the table. And that means all hands to the pump. Ly faces a choice no parent should have to make – taking her daughters out of school to help at the café.
