Oxfam meet the chairman of Malambo

In April 2006, Communications Officer Jane Beesley met Raphael Manangoi, Chairman of Malambo Village. Raphael explained how Oxfam is helping the village to cope during the prolonged drought that hit Tanzania in 2006.

"The current drought is one of the worst that anyone can remember. If it weren't for the support we're getting from Oxfam, Malambo would be in a dire situation. It's April now, and we have had no rain since February. Many families are losing livestock, through hunger and disease. Here, your animals are your wealth. You become vulnerable and poor if all of them die."

Malambo is now playing a vital role in keeping the district fed, while the drought continues. Oxfam is paying the rent on the building that's now being used as Malambo's grain bank, and has funded the provision of grain to store there. We've also trained a team of 19 women and men to run the facility, and to distribute grain to families who are in the most urgent need. "With this knowledge, we are keeping our stocks in good condition, our survival depends on it," explains Lepapa Ngorisa, Chair of the grain bank. "We really appreciate that Oxfam is here to support us," adds Raphael.

What is Oxfam doing?

In April, Oxfam launched its biggest-ever food crisis appeal. We are providing food and water to more than 700,000 people in Tanzania, Kenya, and Somalia, and we will continue to do this for as long as it is needed.
