Oxfam GB in South America
Oxfam GB has been working in South America for more than 40 years, to find lasting solutions to poverty, and suffering. We now have offices in five countries in the region.
One of the main characteristics of South America is its inequity. Nearly 22 per cent of the 340 million people who live in the region have to survive on less than a dollar a day. Oxfam wants to change this situation.
We focus our work on the defence of three fundamental rights:
- the right to a sustainable livelihood;
- the right to be heard;
- the right to have a life protected against armed conflict and natural disasters.
In collaboration with local and regional partners, Oxfam executes development and humanitarian assistance programs, promotes public campaigns and carries out activities to influence decision makers. By these actions we aim to tackle the root causes of poverty.
Oxfam Great Britain is one of the thirteen independent Oxfams that make up Oxfam International. Many of these Oxfams are active in South America. We often combine our efforts to be more efficient and effective in addressing the problems of the region.
