Helping farmers help themselves
The Dominican Republic is heavily dependent on exports of coffee, cocoa, and sugar. But the land has been farmed and deforested for decades so soil quality is poor.
The local market has also been flooded with cheap subsidised imports from rich countries which are undercutting local farmers and driving them out of business. Many bankrupt farmers are forced to move to towns and work in foreign factories for meagre wages.
How Oxfam is helping
We train poor farmers in environmentally-friendly farming techniques, helping them reduce and repair land damage. We also give them marketing advice and help them form lobbying groups to fight unfair trade rules.
