Eritrea

In Eritrea, Oxfam helps people cope with regular drought and to make a secure living from the land. We also focus on food security, public health, gender and community empowerment.
Coping with drought
Some 80 per cent of Eritreans depend on the land to make a living. Yet frequent droughts make it especially hard for people to produce enough to survive.
- 66 per cent of the population lives below the poverty line
- Life expectancy is just 58
How Oxfam is helping
Oxfam has been providing clean drinking water and distributing seeds and seedlings so that farmers can experiment with new drought-resistant crops. We help people be better prepared for, and able to cope with, drought, and provide training and support to farmers to help them improve the quality of their land.

Before Oxfam came, our mothers and sisters would walk for three or four hours each way to get water from the valley.![]()
