Fighting flooding
The word Guyana means 'land of many waters.' Particularly vulnerable to regular flooding, the country lives up to its name.
Much of the population lives below sea level, and the floods of 2005-6 left parts of the country submerged for nearly two weeks.
How Oxfam is helping
Our initial flood response reached 60,000 people. Our work is now focused on three main areas:
- Helping communities to be prepared for any future disasters
- Counselling children traumatised by the floods
- Running training programmes to help restore the livelihoods of people who lost their animals and crops in the floods
This training has greatly enhanced my knowledge in terms of treating and caring for the plants, and taking the necessary precautions during floods.
