The largest country in Central America, Nicaragua is one of the poorest in the northern hemisphere.
- 50 per cent of the population lives below the poverty line
- There is a huge rich-poor divide
For farmers living in rural areas, it can be a struggle to survive. Many of the traditional methods they use fail to produce high enough yields, and are having a devastating effect on local rainforests.
How Oxfam is helping
We raise awareness of sustainable and environmentally-friendly farming methods so that farmers are able to conserve their precious soil and water resources. Through ‘farmer to farmer’ training we teach farmers to pass on what they learn so that whole communities can be reached quickly and effectively.
Although I only did the first year of primary school, I feel I can do anything in the field because of my involvement with the 'farmer to farmer' programme.

Hurricane Felix 2007
Hurricane Felix hit the Nicaraguan coast on 4 September 2007, bringing heavy rains and winds of up to 180 km/h. Tens of thousands of homes have been lost or damaged and the North East of Nicaragua completely cut off.
