Scottish Oxfam campaigners at the G8 rally

Oxfam in Scotland Media Release - 08 June 2007

Oxfam campaigners have been on the ground in Rostock, Germany to make sure Scotland’s voice is heard at this year’s G8 summit. Working under the banner, Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP), which includes Oxfam, SCIAF and Jubilee Scotland, they are calling on the G8 leaders to Make Aid Work, Drop The Debt, and deliver Trade Justice by honouring their commitments made in Gleneagles in 2005.

Eilidh Whiteford, Chair of GCAP Scotland, said, “The world spends more on bottled water than development aid. The G8 leaders need to get their priorities right and invest in health and education. 50,000 people a day will die from preventable, treatable diseases because the G8 has failed to honour its commitments.

“It is no good the worlds’ leading politicians saying they will tackle global poverty if they don’t then act to deal with the problems that are causing extreme poverty.”

Oxfam Campaigner, Mark Kiehlmann, added, “I have found as a campaigner that people throughout Scotland want to see the elimination of global poverty. Scots want G8 leaders to use their power to listen to people all over the world and make the changes that can improve the lives of millions.”
