Oxfam's work in Colombia in depth

Spanish version of this page

Oxfam has been working in Colombia for more than 20 years. In this country our work is based around the following issues:

A right to sustainable livelihoods:
  • Oxfam helps small-scale producers to develop viable long-term futures through improved farming methods, better access to markets and more influence in the decisions which affect their lives.
  • Oxfam works with social organisations, non-government organisations and other partners to encourage agricultural and trade policies that take into account the needs of small-scale producers.
  • Oxfam contributes to the Make Trade Fair campaign at regional and global levels. This campaign aims to transform trade rules so that they benefit small-scale producers. In Colombia, the campaign focuses on promoting trade agreements that help increase coffee prices; supporting initiatives against the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA); and supporting social organisations that promote the rights of working women in agribusiness.
A right to life and security:
  • Oxfam supports vulnerable communities in Uraba (Antioqueño and Chocoano) and Catatumbo (Santander) regions who were displaced because of conflict. Oxfam is providing public health and water and sanitation facilities, improving housing, and food security.
  • Oxfam works with others to promote international humanitarian law, and in the development of public policies which defend the rights of displaced communities and encourage their protection.
Work on conflict:
  • Oxfam works with affected communities and international networks to expose what effect the conflict is having on the most vulnerable groups, so as to increase the interest and actions of the national and international community in finding a long-term solution to the conflict.

These actions are implemented with partners: social organisations; human rights organisations; non-government organisations and national networks. The projects resulting from this work directly benefit 24,000 people who are most affected by poverty, social exclusion and socio-political violence.
