Oxfam's work in Indonesia in depth

Participatory and Accountable Development

For more than 30 years, Indonesian people were living under military rules that severely restricted the exercise of human rights.

An entire generation has grown up knowing only the disempowering of The New Order and having to cope with rampant corruption, collusion and nepotism.

As a result, civil society and activists’ capacities were limited. People did not have opportunities to participate in the process of planning, implementing and evaluation that would have enabled them to actively participate in overall process of development.

Oxfam works with communities and partners to:

  • Support partners and civil society to monitor government and donor policies in relation to poverty reduction strategy (PRSP) at a district and national level to promote transparency and accountability.
  • Build capacity for local partners and people organisations to be skilful in budget analysis, poverty diagnosis, strategy development, and budget allocation.
  • Support civil society organisations and community based organisation to influence the government and donor policies both at national and sub-national level.
  • Support community-based organisations to have dialogues with similar organisations and create networks with policy makers.
