Oxfam's work in Lebanon in depth

Oxfam is helping people to rebuild their lives following the conflict with Israel in 2006, where an estimated 900,000 people fled from their homes. Oxfam responded with a humanitarian programme in South Beirut, southern Lebanon, and Baalbeck. In May 2007, the conflict in Nahr El Bared, a Palestinian camp in northern Lebanon, resulted in the displacement of more then 30,000 Palestinian refugees to surroundings camps in Lebanon. While reconstruction is currently underway to repair the camps, Oxfam has been helping people to recover.

Oxfam in Lebanon

In Lebanon, Oxfam GB is the leading Oxfam affiliate in humanitarian responses. In response to the humanitarian crisis, Oxfam has been helping the affected communities to repair their lives including rebuilding water and sanitation systems and supporting livelihood projects. After the crisis, Oxfam has moved its work from relief to recovery. We have funded income-generation projects for vulnerable groups including rural women, disabled people and young Palestinian refugees. That has helped make a difference.

Gender equality

Oxfam is working to promote  gender equality, and making sure that womens’s voices are heard.  Through our local partners we’re helping to raise awareness and change attitudes amongst men towards domestic violence both in Lebanon and in neighbouring Arab countries.

Livelihood support to Palestinian Refugees

Following the conflict in the Nahr El Bared camp in early 2007, an estimated 5,500 people were displaced from their homes. Oxfam has been helping some of those people who lost their livelihoods to re-establish their businesses and start working again. We are providing  in-kind grants and valuable skills training to some of the most vulnerable groups including women and youth.  Moreover, Oxfam is working with local partners to link students looking for work with those that have jobs, as well as to employers in the private sector who need trained workers.

Strengthening civil society

Working through partner organisations, Oxfam is developing projects which will have a positive impact on the lives of poor people. These include providing technical assistance to local people on issues such as finance, programme management, and humanitarian responses.
