The Urgency of Now - front cover

The Urgency of Now is for people with less time on their hands – we’ve summarised From Poverty to Power‘s main arguments in this mini-book. It’s a great introduction to many of the issues and should only take an hour to read. If it makes you hungry for more, then read From Poverty to Power too

Why should I read it?

You can’t afford not to. The problem, simply put, is that if we don’t do something about inequality and poverty now, the world will get more and more unstable. Inequality will reduce standards of living around the world. We’ll all feel the sting.

Without action, we will all increasingly see:

  • Rising food and oil prices;
  • People moving between countries due to flooding, food shortages, or natural disasters (all made worse by climate change);
  • Fighting over shrinking resources – both crime and conflict (also made worse by climate change);
  • Wasted opportunities and lives.

Growing inequality has a price.

And we will all eventually pay it.

What needs to change?

Basically it comes down to power. Poor people and countries have very little power, and so they find it hard to improve their lives and the lives of their citizens. And power is about more than just having money (though money’s pretty important).

All around the world people are trying to secure their basic rights to education, water, food, housing, health care, and a say in how they live their lives. Many governments are struggling to provide these things; others are just struggling. Our own prosperity depends on us helping and not hindering.

These books are essential reading for anyone who cares about our shared future.
