Technical Briefing Note on responding to floods and flooding

Photo of flooding. Photo: OxfamHow do floods differ from Oxfam's other humanitarian interventions? Very often floods are rapid onset situations which can be caused and aggravated by a number of factors.

The object of this piece of work is to document past experience from previous Oxfam flood responses, and to produce a TBN to provide good practice guidance to OGB field staff. Links to other on-going flood respons work will also be identified.

Technical Briefing Note on Ecological Sanitation in Post-Emergency Settings

Photo: OxfamThe use of ecological sanitation units in areas with high water tables, and subject to regular flooding, is one option available to humanitarian organizations in the post emergency phase.

Based on Oxfam's experiences in Jamaica, after hurricane Dean, a number of ecological sanitation (ecosan) units where piloted for beneficiaries. This follows on from similar Oxfam experiences in the use of ecosan units in El Salvador, Zimbabwe, Dominican Republic, and Peru.

Technical Briefing Note on Contracting Out Engineering Works in Emergencies

Introduction to Contracting Out PH Engineering Works & Contract Management” provides an overview of the key peculiarities of managing construction contracts in the emergency context.

Contracters. Photo: OxfamThe document does not aim to provide tools for the direct implementation of projects or enforce new procedures but rather  to stimulate awareness on the risks and peculiarities of construction activities in developing countrie.

Although this document is aimed at Oxfam staff, we would very much welcome feedback and advise from field workers with other organisations. Eventually, it is hoped to link the Technical Briefing Note to another Intranet or Internet website containing standard contract and other useful forms and documents.
