Influencing the people in power – ReGender advocacy

An important part of ReGender is working with policy-makers to tackle the causes of poverty. This means working with people who have the power to make change at local, regional and national levels.

National

Roundtable with Communities and Local Government staff

In May 2007, Oxfam met with Baroness Andrews and members of the department for Communities and Local Government to discuss how the department could put gender guidelines in place for regeneration programmes such as Neighbourhood Renewal, in order to improve public service delivery.

Regional

Gender Equality Scheme and Action Plan with a Regional Development Agency

Oxfam worked closely with one of the leading regional regeneration bodies, the North West Development Agency (NWDA), as they developed their Gender Equality Scheme and Action Plan.  The plan sets out the NWDA commitment to equality for women and men, including transgendered people, and will shape the way they work with communities and other organisations for years to come.

Oxfam and NWDA are now looking into ways they can continue to work together to support and monitor the implementation of the action plan.

Local

Gender in Regeneration Seminar with a local authority

Early in 2007, a ground breaking seminar for senior managers of Sheffield City Council was organised in partnership with Oxfam and hosted by the Lord Mayor of Sheffield at that time, Cllr Jackie Drayton, to debate and discuss how gender impacts on regeneration in all areas of the City’s life. The seminar included opening remarks from the Council’s Chief Executive, Executive Director and Lead Councillor, and all major regeneration departments were represented in the discussions and workshops.

“We are working hard to ensure that our workforce represents the diversity of Sheffield. We are currently looking at working with schools promoting non-traditional career paths such as engineering and construction for girls and primary education and childcare work for boys”

- Sheffield City Council Leader, Cllr Jan Wilson, January 2007
